So why was the Bonbonniere given out in the first place? Well, things like weddings (back in the day) were considered lucky. The thought was that if the bride and groom would pass out gifts to the guests, it would somehow include them in the luck as well. These almonds were supposed to show luck for wealth, happiness, fertility, health, and a long life.
